Copywriters and web designers are always looking for ways to arouse the website visitor’s curiosity. Unlike other ads, Adwords neither arouse the visitor’s curiosity nor disturb the main flow of the web page. In fact, the opposite is true. Adwords are meant to look like part of the search results giving the user the feeling that those ads are there because he asked for them. No one has any doubt that this simple design helps Google to promote both their search engine and the Adwords advertising program.

Take part in the action

Banner designers wisely used interactive technologies like Flash to develop type of banners that invite the user to take part in the action. Drawing the user into the action can be accomplished in many creative ways. Some web designers use popular old games elements as part of the scene. You all know the famous game pacman. One of the banners that I like the most is the one where the user is allowed to let pacman “eat” few dollar signs. At the successful completion of this mission, a nice slogan is revealed asking him to open a saving account that will earn money with a fixed interest rate. The idea behind those interactive banners is simple: Let the user take part in the action and then at the right moment when his mind is less resistant, show him the sales message. Those interactive banners proved to be very efficient. Their biggest disadvantage is that most webmasters will not allow that kind of banner because it distracts too much from the web page content.

Back to Black and White

Website designers are always seeking to be different with their design ideas. One banner fashion trend that can be found lately is Black and White banners. Although research shows that blue and yellow are the most efficient color to use in a banner, Black and White banners have been seen a lot lately. It’s probably something that will eventually vanish, but the idea behind it is to be different and to make the user wonder what’s up and hopefully click on the banner to find out.

Annoying Website Design

Have you ever considered that your website may be annoying? When it’s comes to website design, knowing what visitors hate most is a must, unless you don’t want them to visit you again. This article describes what you should exclude from your website. If you know about an annoying website, feel free to send this article to its webmaster.

A few weeks ago I received an email from a colleague asking me to check one of the website he had developed. He is a web designer and his client wanted a nice attractive flash header. The flash header was great. You can’t miss it at all. Some nice graphics elements were flying in while sound effects created just the right atmosphere. However, after starting to explore the website, the header became very annoying because every time you clicked on the website the header restarted. What was pleasant initially became very annoying very quickly, disturbing your concentration and making it difficult to read what was on the page.

He is not the first to create what I like to call – "annoying website design". Many webmasters, especially new webmasters are totally “in love” with their ideas and tend to go overboard with their design in one way or another. It’s nice to have an attractive header, but is it really necessary to assault the visitor’s mind with it? In my opinion, absolutely not!

Webmasters sometimes forget that their website design should send a message to the visitor that should reflect the website topic and not the programmer’s skill level.

Is Your Website Design Annoying?

Well…. It’s not that hard to be annoying. However, some webmasters are much better than others at annoying their visitors. Check my top 5 list and decide for yourself whether you have been annoying your visitors.

1. Background music – Unless you are operating an online internet radio station or sell music CDs, why play a midi/wav file in the background continuously on every page?
2. Huge font size – If you are designing a website for people with a disability then you are doing the right thing, but if not then you are shouting. People don’t like it when someone shouts at them.
3. Small font size – Do you want to be heard? Keep a normal tone, don’t shout but "speak" in a reasonable volume.
4. Overlapping layers – Layers can be very useful up to the point. But not when they are being used to put an annoying message in the visitor’s face. Don’t try to force your visitor to read your messages. Try persuasion instead of brute force.
5. Popup windows – Even though popup windows are now blocked by many add on tools, webmasters keep using them. The annoying part of popups is sometimes we actually miss important information because of those anti popup tools. Haven't you heard the old phrase "if you can’t beat him, join him”? Don’t use pop up windows. Put your important messages in a central place on your website.

Most likely each one of us has our own private top five lists. You probably have many more annoying design cases in mind. Well, you’re right, the list is much longer then that. I just wanted to describe some of the highlights in order to bring this important subject your attention.

Some of you are probably reading those lines and smiling while some others have a feeling a deja-vu. Keep in your mind that as a webmaster the last thing you want to do is put lots of effort into your website and then find out that your visitors hate it. It's not a matter of taste, it's more about being the same polite person we all try to be when we go to a party.

I tried to point out a few things that might be useful to some web designers and webmasters. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to send this article to my friend, hopefully he’ll send it to his client :)

How to find a good freelancer ?

Whether you currently deal with a freelancer website, or are just looking for the best place to find a freelancer, the biggest problem you face is how to find a good reliable freelance, one that will do the job properly with good quality work and finish it on time.

Many sites offer you, the webmaster, a place to post your projects to be bid on by freelancers. All of these sites let you contact offshore workers that live in countries where wages are only a fraction of what they are in the more industrialized nations. This allows you to keep your project budget low and save money by keeping your full-time staff small.

So, how can you find this “diamond in the rough”? You know, that reliable individual who delivers quality work on time and within agreed upon budget? There is no simple answer. The best you can do is using the tools provided by the freelance website to try and minimize your risk.

Unfortunately, most of the existing freelance websites use a very poor rating system that only allows a webmaster to rate a freelancer on a scale from 1-10. This system doesn’t take any of the more important variables into account, such as the complexity of the project.

The complexity of a project is important. A freelancer doing many simple and inexpensive jobs may have an excellent rating and do very good work for that kind of project. But, there is no guarantee they can handle a more complex project. Since the more complex projects cost more to get done, at least one freelance website has developed a rating system that takes complexity into consideration by using the dollar amount of the project as part of the rating formula to provide the webmaster with additional information. Thereby, hoping to make the webmaster’s decision a little easier.

Here are a couple of additional suggestions for hiring a freelancer:

Do Not Post a Budget !!!

“Why not?” you ask. If you post a budget, most freelancers will bid based on the budget amount. Unfortunately, a reasonable cost in one part of the world is insanely high or ridiculously low in another part of the world.

For example, you want someone to create a logo for you. Any decent graphic artist should be able to do that. So, it probably is safe to go with the lowest bidder. But, suppose you need a sales letter written for an Australian audience, do you really think someone is Eastern Europe or China will be able to do as good a job as a native Australian? Probably not, but, the cost of living is a lot higher in Australia and that individual would need to charge more for the same amount of work.

Do Not Hire Outside of Your Expertise.

But, you say, “If I was an expert, I wouldn’t need to hire someone else!” While that may be true, you do need to be sufficiently familiar with the area of work to be able to accurately describe the project, to know what and isn’t technically possible and know whether the bids you receive are reasonable for the amount of work involved.

If Necessary, get advice from someone who does know the area of work. Most sites provide a message board for you to negotiate with the bidders anonymously before you select one of them for the project. Pay careful attention the freelancer’s reaction to the project. The ideal candidate is one who loves his work. Ask them to describe similar projects they have done in the past or to provide samples of their work if feasible. Graphic artists, web designers and writers will be able to provide samples. Programmers and some others may not be able to provide samples but they may be able to provide references if they haven’t already been rated by other webmasters.

Following the steps above and keeping the lines of communication open will dramatically increase your chances of having a successful experience with your chosen freelancer. It can save you both time and money as well as help you manage your business in the most effective manner. After all, you face all of the same challenges in dealing with freelancers as you face in dealing with any employee, plus the additional challenges created by being in different geographic locations.

Webmasters and upcoming Blogger regularly send me a email regarding Google Adsense Accounts because when they apply for the same most of the times they are rejected for multiple reasons and the blogger keep searching for different ways to get a Adsense Account Approval. Here are some of the emails they had sent me recently.

Hello amit can you please help me create an adsense account. I have started a new website, but adsense disapproved my application.

I just want to know, how to set up an adsense account? I’ve tried before, then my site was not fully ready, so google considered my site not eligible for adsense, later, done modifications to site structure, I tried to set up adsense account again, but google said that my google id cannot be granted to adsense, (as i was trying to set up adsense with my email account, i tried before). Google gave options to create another account just for adsense, but i want to set up it to my current id.

You have written much about google adsense but my problem is still unsolved. As we all knows that google adsense approve blogspot blogs in his publishing network but when i tried then i got with a reply that you should have a top level domain for it. What to do?

First of all let me make you clear that you should never apply for a Google Adsense Account for your friends or known people because its them who should be doing it. Also the application Page would even record your IP address, hence to be on safe side always recommend the person who is looking to get a Adsense Account to apply for the same themselves. Lets go the current rules for the application of your new account as per Google Guidelines :

Unacceptable site content: In order to participate in Google AdSense,
publishers’ websites and application information must satisfy the
following guidelines:

1. Your website must be your own top-level domain (www.example.com and not http://www.example.com/mysite).
This means that you should be applying for a Google Adsense Account with your Root Domain Name and not from a Sub Folder. You can also apply from Sub Domains like blogspot.com or blog.com which offer you free blog services. Make sure that you apply from your main website and not from a new blog because a established website has more chances of application approval.

2. Your domain must have been registered and active for at least 6 months before you apply for AdSense.
As previously mentioned, the service requires you to apply from a established website rather than a new one because a new blogger or website owner is not going to make any good amount of money in the initial stage and recently we have seen many fraud account holders who opt for wrong tactics in getting clicks and making money.

3. You must provide accurate personal information with your application that matches the information on your domain registration.
This requirement is important because in this case the Adsense Team can verify the ownership of the Domain Name through which you are applying for a new Account. I have come through many fraudsters who even have applied for a Google Adsense Account by entering my website URL in the application process but were rejected because of the Whois Information.

4. Your website must contain substantial, original content.
This is a very obvious point because unless a website have Original Content, it wont be making any good amount of money. Not only counting the money part but posting Duplicate Content is totally wrong and is not allowed, hence if someone applies for a new Publisher Account for a website with copied content then it would be rejected.

5. Your site must comply with Google AdSense program policies.
There are multiple Google Adsense Policies which have to be perfectly implemented and made sure you dont break any of them. The most important of which is not posting advertisements on pages which have Illegal Content.

If you have made sure that you have taken case of all the above listed points and still not able to get a new account then there are some ways you can get it. Following this you need to select ‘Display text and image ads in all ad units’ under the My Account > Account Settings Section. This can be considered as another way to Increase Adsense Income along with the Google Adsense FAQ which was written for our valuable readers who are looking for Adsense Tips.

We would like to tell you about a minor change you can make, which can have a major impact on your AdSense revenue; opting in to text and image ads. Recently, some AdSense publishers have experienced a significant revenue increase after making this change. Indian Railways website at indianrail.gov.in offers everyone with Ticket Reservations and related services, like the PNR Enquiry, Train Calendar, Train Time Table etc which are very much useful for the millions of travellers all over India.

The company is said to be in huge profits in the past few years and there are many reasons for this which includes Couriers & Parcels, Earnings from shipping of Coal, Steel, Stones, Sugar, irctc Catering etc essential goods. The passenger section includes fares taken under Tatkal scheme and high fares in A/C First Class & A/C 2 Tier. Now here is one of the best part of making money which Railways is adopting right now.

According to different website traffic measurement services on an average the Indianrail.gov.in website receives Daily Pageviews of around 10,86,956 ie around a million page views all of the pages showing different advertisements like Google Adsense, CPM ads from admagnet, Popup Ads etc. The lowest the CPM Ad agencies pay for the advertisements is 0.10$ and on an average big branded websites achieve atleast 1$ CPM rate because of direct advertisers and targetted visitors with high budgets. Now this 1$ CPM rate would mean that the Indian Railways gets paid 1 USD for every 1000 page views, while the Pop-up Ads normally range from 2$-4$ for different networks. Lets move towards the calculations part.

These calculations are calculated on the basis of 1$ average CPM but as mentioned earlier big websites get excellent offers from the advertisers who would be ready to pay higher rates just for displaying their advertisements. This article is useful only to the Indian Adsense Publishers because its not a option available by the Google Adsense team but its a browser trick which will allow you to show your current Adsense revenue in the Indian Rupees as shown in the below Screenshot.

and then install this Chrome Extension – ‘Chrome Currency Converter‘ under the extensions panel and Enable it. That’s it now whatever website you access will display all the USD Amounts converted to the current rate of Indian Rupees.

Reasons why Google AdSense Accounts are Disabled

The single most dreaded mail for people making serious money with AdSense is the one from Google Adsense and which goes like :

“Hello,
While going through our records recently, we found that your AdSense account has posed a significant risk to our AdWords advertisers. Since keeping your account in our publisher network may financially damage our advertisers in the future, we’ve decided to disable your account….”
In simpler words, AdSense account holders are told their actions do not follow AdSense Terms and Conditions.

OR

Their site does not meet Google’s Landing page requirements.

Google Adsense BannedGoogle Adsense BannedMany are taken aback by this sudden death of their major source of online income. Some people make their bread and butter income online and to them it’s like a shock. To many other it’s not as shocking. People who have tried to outsmart Google and find loopholes in Adsense often make a quick few bucks but Big G always catches up and how! Although a book could be written on how people without any quality website or with third world traffic (from North Africa, India, China) make thousand dollars every day in Adsense, this article will just highlight prominent reasons why AdSense accounts are disabled.

MFA – Made For Adsense : Yes, sounds right, this is the biggest reason nowadays why Google disables Adsense accounts. People with no intention of building a quality website often create websites with content copy-pasted from Wikipedia or Other websites. They are not interested in providing any ORIGINAL content. MFA sites are usually 5 – 10 posts long and with Adsense codes pasted all over the pages. Whenever someone opens such a site, all one sees is clickable Adsense ads with little or no content. Such sites have very CTR (click through rate), often 5 or 7 out of every 10 visitors click on an Ad. If you have cheap or free traffic, you can make Serious Money that way. Google knows this and disables every MFA site it comes across.

Click Fraud : This is the dumbest way to get your Adsense account disabled. Google tracks every click made on every ad across its network. It knows if Ads are being clicked intentionally or normally. Clicking on your ads at home or taking a trip to your local cafe to do the same is the sure shot way to Disablement.

Also, joining Adsense click exchange groups (I click your ads, you click mine) is not the way to earn money online. Asking your friends to click on your ads or paying them money to do it is only going to get your Adsense account in danger. Google has developed algorithms far too sophisticated to be outsmarted by any of these monkey-business strategies. Your best bet is the hard way of making money.

Original content + Great site = Traffic = $$$

Arbitrage : Until recently this technique made millions for people doing it. People buy traffic from Adwords or YSM or MSN Ad central and guide it to pages laden with Adsense. They bid on cheap words like wallpapers, video etc with every click costing them a few cents. Keeping content to a minimal usually is the key ingredient here as more irrelevant or lesser the content, higher will be the CTR. This model works only with high CTR, usually no less than 20 % is what makes you money in Arbitrage.

An example – For every click Cost = 2 cents, income from every click = 50 cents to a dollar. With CTR of just 20% and 50 cents income, figure for 10,000 visitors are

Income on 2000 clicks @50 cents = $1000.00
Cost of 10,000 visitors @2 cents = $200.00
Net profit = $ 800.00

Google also knows this and has quite clearly said in its program policies that Arbitrage sites are not acceptable. There is quite a risk here as you might end up paying for your traffic and then get your account disabled without getting any unpaid income.

Violation of Terms and Conditions : Your AdSense account is the danger of being disabled if you have altered the AdSense codes so that
* Ads are placed in pop-ups, emails or software
* Ads open up in a new window.

If you buy traffic, your landing page should be in compliance with Google’s Landing Page Guidelines. Any violation could get your account disabled. Also, if your site is found out to contain Malware or virus or initiates download automatically, your AdSense account is in danger.

Adwords Profits Guide - Free Guide to Increase Adwords Profits

It seems as if most people using Google AdWords don't care much at all about their profit because everyday I see countless advertisers make very basic and careless mistakes that jeopardize their AdWords Google Profits. Below is a list of some tips for you to use to help increase your AdWords Google Profits, rather than giving your money away to Google.

Set a daily budget at your minimum profit margin and don't increase it until you make a sale. Don't start off with a $200 per day budget if you only get $20 per sale. Instead start with a $20 budget and work your way up.

Describe the product or service you're selling as accurately as possible, this way you will clarify your product's purpose to the visitors so you can prevent people from clicking on your advertisements who don't want what you're selling.

If you're getting too many clicks and no sales, the problem is either with your text advertisement or your keywords. Assuming your keywords are relevant you will need to filter the non-buyers from the buyers with your text advertisement. To do this include the words "buy", "order", "purchase", and/or your product's price in your text advertisement. This will tell the web surfers that your product costs money and if they are looking for a free product not to click on your ad.

Don't increase your bids on inactive keywords unless you've changed your text advertisement for landing page to increase the quality. If you increase your bids to activate your inactive keywords and you don't change anything in your account to increase your quality, your once inactive keyword will become inactive again.

As a general rule, most internet products take about 100-200 clicks per sale. Find your maximum CPC using this information. If you make $20 per sale don't bid more than $0.20 per click because your costs will exceed your profit if you don't make a sale within 100 clicks.

The techniques above should drastically help to improve your profits with Google AdWords. Some of the tips will do this by preventing invalid or irrelevant clicks while the other techniques will decrease your costs by increasing your relevancy and quality within Google AdWords itself.

The Forgotten Fundamentals of SEO

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to view my SEO hints and tips e-book on the often forgotten aspects of SEO. This book was written from the collective knowledge and information gathered by Chris Diprose, owner and manager of Kanga Internet. Kanga Internet are located in Melbourne, Australia and they focus on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Web Development for the Joomla Content Management System (CMS).

With Search Engine Optimization there are lots of unknowns, educated guesses and knowledge gained from personal and associative experience. Google, Yahoo and MSN keep their cards close to their chest when it comes to revealing how their ranking systems actually work. They tell the community trickles of information on what things can affect search engine results, how they can be improved and what to do in certain situations, but mostly knowing what to do to achieve good results is achieved by studying and hard work. Much alike other SEO consultants I have gathered information from various sources and worked constantly on improving results for customers. I am always looking for new intelligent ways to improve search engine results. I believe in "White Hat" (or more appropriately, "Grey Hat") principles.

Edition 1 of this e-book is intended for people looking to improve their websites from the ground up. I address SEO design fundamentals; the things you need to consider before embarking on any text and keyword analysis. I hope you find these hints and tips useful.

The Website Revelation – What owning a website actually means.
As a Web Developer and SEO consultant I deal with many existing website owners who are looking to modify or improve their website. I also deal with many people who are looking to start their web presence with a new website. Through both of these interactions there is often a common theme; a misunderstanding or an attitude. I call this a misconception of reality, as often the reality of what the Internet can actually do for the persons business and what they think it can do differ massively.

Often it is presumed that by simply owning a domain and having a website built and published on the Internet, thousands of people will magically find the website, visit it and buy their products. "If you build it, they will come" should be removed from the vocabulary as soon as possible if you are to adjust attitudes to the underlying search technology. As a businessman in the real World, it is obvious that it would not happen outside of the Internet ether, so what is so different online? Maybe it was the Technology boom 10 years ago that caused a rift in understanding or maybe the buzz that caused the meteoric rise in the stock prices of Tech Companies, I can hear the thoughts of the small businessman, "surely this can be replicated for my business" – in answer I would say, "well, it is unlikely, but you should be able to achieve some results over time".

It is most important when taking on a project like Search Engine Optimization for a website, to know that it is important to be committed for the long haul. It is no small task and sufficient funds need to be allocated to the project. Delivery deadlines need to be correctly scoped against required changes, in order to meet client expectations. The key points of responsibility to the SEO project are in knowing that there are big changes near the start and during setup but the changes do not stop after setup, there are a continuous ongoing refinements to the design and system over time. In this regard I find it important to manage expectations and set realistic long term goals on what a website can be expected to achieve and in what time frames those goals hope to be met.

So what should your goal be when you are delving into SEO for your website? Well, everyone’s goal is exactly the same; improve page rankings, improve page visits and hits and finally gain more sales through the website.

When it comes to SEO and achieving these goals you have to have principles and my main principle is, "Good websites get good ratings and bad websites get bad ratings or none at all." As time goes on with the improvement of search engine technology and the refinement of search engine results this statement becomes truer and truer. I believe in results through "white hat"(reads; "Grey Hat") principles and methodologies.

What are "white hat" principles? I guess I would compare it to doing things the honest way and the right way without risk. So develop a good site, promote good linking, have good informative content and keep working on it and then you are on the road to good rankings through "White Hat" principles.

So, why should you do things the "white hat" way? Well, search engines do have some kind of understanding, an artificial intelligence. They soon catch on to websites spamming or linking to websites with no relevance and bad cross linking. It’s about being smart, in for the long term and wanting your business to grow organically, naturally.

So how do I go about improving my site and making it optimized for search engines naturally? Well, that’s why you’re here! So let’s run through few of the things you should be doing in your websites from a fundamental level.

Domain names:
When choosing a domain name, choose one that is relevant to the product or service you are going to provide and that is as simple as possible. There are considerations of branding and product/service provided that should go into this choice. Involvement of marketing personal and product understanding is required but also consultation with your SEO professional is advantageous. In this step I would say, take some time and choose wisely. Keep it simple and easy to remember, often saying it out loud will make it clear whether it can be understood by a simple man.

It is a strongly held belief by many SEO professionals that buying a domain which is older, and that has been around for a while, means it will not be sand boxed by Google. What’s the sandbox effect? Well, it refers to what Google does to a website or domain that is new or is relatively unknown by Google. In many instances Google’s Sandbox effect relegates the new domain to sub-optimal inclusion in search results. Regardless of the sites optimization it lowers the websites relevance and ranking to the term searched upon. If you can use your old business domain name, then consider this very important.

If, however, you are buying a new domain name then keep it relevant to the product or service being sold or offered on the website. Keep it close, relevant and simple. Relevance is primary.

Location specific domain or international domain ( .com or com.au)? Personally I think dot com’s are better, mainly because they appeal Internationally but if you want to you can keep it location specific and to your region then consider purchasing all similar higher level domains, yourdomain.com and yourdomain.com.au, if you can.

Choosing a Host:
Fast, reliable and gives you all you that you need and want. Preferably gives a unique IP. Again some SEO professionals believe this can also have a detrimental affect in Google rankings but from my experience it sometimes does and it sometimes doesn’t. I have had some sites come in with high PR rankings on shared IP’s and others when I shifted to a new IP the PR of the site jumped, so this is still a bit of a mystery when it comes to Google rankings. I guess a consideration

Traffic considerations: When choosing your host ensure the plan you are on can be expanded so that any new increases in traffic can be accommodated accordingly.

Site Design:
There are several fundamental things to consider when you are modifying or designing a website.

Flash:
Flash is has been popular for a few years now and I truly believe it has its place. It is a great way of showing many products or services in a small area, has great visual impact if done properly and can set a good friendly tone to the website visitor. Having said that, I also hate flash; it can be an absolute nightmare when it comes to search engine optimization.

What you should know about flash; it cannot be read by a search engine as the search engine cannot read the text or the images contained within it nor can it interpret what is in the pictures being shown.

When it comes to flash I would suggest, not making your whole website flash. If you are designing a new website and you want to use flash then use it in high impact areas to capture the attention of your intended audience but use it sparingly. It is important to ensure that as much text content(to a maximum discussed in my next book, generally 300-500 characters) is available on the webpage and in simple HTML.

Frames:
Many older websites were designed with frames. Frames are where the main home page is actually a frameset page that includes several other pages into it. This makes the page hard to index in search engines and should be avoided. While Google do now index framed sites, it is important to note that most of the other top search engines still cannot follow frame links. They only see the frameset page and ignore the rest of the inner frames. This presents an SEO problem to us because it is highly likely those inner pages contain our content keywords.

Nowadays this is not really a huge issue as it is so uncommon for a designer to actually use frames but the easiest way to resolve the issue would be to enforce a no use policy on frames.

Page Layout:
According to research the Googlebot trawls web pages from left to right and top to bottom. So given this little tidbit of information it is clear that you should be putting our most valuable keywords and information on the left and near the top. Of course this is a blanket statement and does not take into account design principles and beautification. Just keep it in mind during design of page layout. Position your move relevant keywords to the left of the page and near the top.

Good HTML Coding:
A lot of HTML generator programs out there bloat HTML to the point it is 3-4 times larger than what it would be if you hand coded it. Keep it simple, use a text editor, edit your HTML the old school way; until there is a HTML generator tool worthy of use. If you can’t code HTML then do a search on the Internet and find a decent, free, e-book and learn how to do it.

Javascript:
This is very popular among many web development professionals for menu’s, popups, scollers etc etc. It would be my suggestion to use simple plain HTML menu’s or as little Javascript as possible in web pages. There are many small JavaScript menu’s out there that are slim on JavaScript code to reduce this issue and make it almost negligible. Don’t over clutter your site with JavaScript as it increases page size, page load times and the search engines won’t understand it.

Image Sizes:
Keep them small and use only what you need to. This is essential for decreasing page loading times and getting information onto the users screen as soon as possible.

Overall page size and loading:
The overall page size is an important factor. It should load quickly and be easily trawled. If you have followed the HTML hand coding, used minimal javascript, used simple table layouts and good image sizing then you should be fine. There is much evidence that supports the fact that Google and probably the other search engines also, do not like to scan huge files, so keeping your overall HTML page size below 25k is my suggestion.

Dynamic URL’s & page/file names:
Dynamic pages are roadblocks to high search engine positioning. Especially those that end in "?" or "&". In a dynamic site, variables are passed to the URL and the page is generated dynamically, often from information stored in a database as is the case with many e-commerce sites. Normal .html pages are static - they are hard-coded, their information does not change, and there are no "?" or "&" characters in the URL.

Pages with dynamic URLs are present in several engines, notably Google and AltaVista, even though publicly AltaVista claims their spider does not crawl dynamic URLs. To a spider a "?" represents a sea of endless possibilities - some pages can automatically generate a potentially massive number of URLs, trapping the spider in a virtually infinite loop.

As a general rule, search engines will not properly index documents that:
• contain a "?" or "&"
• End in the following document types: .cfm, .asp, .shtml, .php, .stm, .jsp, .cgi, .pl
• Could potentially generate a large number of URLs.
To avoid complications, consider creating static pages whenever possible, perhaps using the database to update the pages, not to generate them on the fly.

Slightly Off Topic Thoughts:
The topics covered here are not considered completely SEO topics but in terms of overall objective – increasing sales, this section is very important. Take these things on board, consider them, consult with your designer and marketing team. Make educated and informed choices on these topics when considering your audience and what your website objectives are.

Screen Size:
Over 65% of all screens in the World are set to run at the 1024x768 resolution. Of the remaining percentage, 13% are running at 800x600, 20% running at larger sizes and 2% are unknown. So this affects the way you design. It would be my suggestion to always design for the smallest user to visit your site, but often I find 800x600 restrictive so I tend to design for slightly larger. Not large enough to make an 800x600 user angry but large enough to make it look good on larger screens also. I weigh up my target users, my intended amount of content and find some happy medium. I generally design for 1000x620 as this is the perfect amount of real estate for a 1024x768 user when they have the browser top bar and status bar and Windows taskbar.

colors and themes:
One important aspect of marketing - selling - is the use of color. Meanings are attached to colors in the same way meanings are attached to words.

• Gold is the color of wealth and prosperity.
• White is the color of pure innocence and cleanliness.
• Pink is the color of femininity and softness.
• Green is the color of natural things and freshness.
• Red is the color of danger and stress.
• Blue is the color the calmness, intelligence. The majority of the World selects blue as a favorite color. It often represents "trust"

Use of color to establish an image or a brand is common in the marketing community, yet when you visit the websites of many search engine optimization professional’s, it's obvious that color significance plays no part in their own web optimization. Some of the colors I found on SEO websites:
• Baby Blue, a color which implies weakness.
• Red, a color which implies risk, or danger.
• Orange a color which implies a cheerful "levity". Orange is one of Americans’ least favorite colors.

Although color selection is off topic for SEO I would consider it a very important factor in what SEO is trying to achieve, in the end, for your website – selling more product, creating loyalty to your brand and customer impact. color research is something you should seriously consider. In summary of color choices I would suggest studying and learning more about your customers, researching color choices and their relevance to your underlying products and making informed choices on these in collaboration. If in doubt then I suggest sticking to safe and trusted colors within safe eye pleasing designs.

Gifs for logos & jpgs for pictures:
Ensure you are using gifs for logos and background placements and jpgs for photos on your website. This helps reduce size and improve clarity of the web site overall.

Browser:
It is vitally important to ensure your web page works in both IE, Firefox and Opera. Testing other browsers is also an advantage but these are the main three in use nowadays (2007). I think quoting stats on the browser breakdown are irrelevant as you need it work in all browsers. W3C cross browser compliance is great for this.

How to save money on the Adwords network

Over the years I have had many accounts with Adwords, spending a small fortune with the Adwords service. So naturally I have picked up many cost saving tricks. I am aware that most people feel Adwords costs too much and delivers little results, this is completely untrue. Adwords is a service that is here to help us, so I have written this article to help web developers make the most out of the service.

1) Set your currency,
First and foremost, select the currency of which you locally trade in. You may think its wise to start your Adwords account in USD, but if you do not live in the USA you may get a shock when you find how much you have been charged.

2) Use negative keywords,
You are using the Adwords service to generate website traffic, so obviously you want the right traffic to generate revenue. Start by using negative keywords for people whom you do not want to click on your advert, the best place to start is the keyword “free”. As I doubt you want to waste money on traffic that will not generate revenue.

3) Make a strict daily budget
Make sure you have set out a daily budget, Adwords generally advise a way out of proportion budget. After all most new Adwords customers have no idea how effective the advertising will be. Do not start off with a bang, your pocket will feel it.

Just as important as the budget, be careful with the CPC rate. I advise you to start with a low number, each click soon adds up very quickly. I actually found that by lowering my CPC rate by 50% I doubled my visitor count…

4) Check those clicks!
One of the most talked about problem with Adwords is, click fraud. There are two main types of click fraud: the first is when any one starts clicking away at your advertisements trying to waste your money. It is very hard to stop this kind of fraud, if you are a victim stop your ads and file a report to Google ASAP.

The second main issue is now that google allows Web Developers to earn money off their websites by placing ads (Adsense) .some Web Developers try to cheat the system by clicking on their ads as much as possible. The best way to stop this kind of fraud is check your page log, Adwords allow you to block out websites that you do
not want your advert to be placed on.

Adwords does not have many protections against Click fraud, although they do disable Adsense accounts who cheat. Google are very hesitant to refund the victims, if at all. Reports tell many organisations are actually suing Google to get their money back, so be careful.

In this article I have illustrated some of the most beneficial ways to save money when advertising with Adwords. My main advice to you is, do not go crazy with your spending. You may not see the results you are after, it does take a while to get to know Adwords. I have had many successful ad campaigns using the Adwords network. However I do advise to look around, with the ever growing popularity of MSN search you may actually find it much more affordable.

web site is to find enough people that are interested in it
so that they are ready to buy. Mastering Google AdWords

making sales immediately. You can create a Google AdWord
campaign in a matter of minutes and be making sales within
24 hours.

2. Create several ads within an ad group - an ad group
consists of a group of ads you create for the keywords you
have researched. Choose your most targeted keyword or
keyword phrase then create at least 2 different ads so you
can see which ad produces the highest click through rate.

The click through rate (CTR) is the ratio of the number of
times a person clicks on your ad based on the number of
times it is viewed. For example if 100 people see your ad
and only one person clicks on your ad to be taken to your
web site, then the CTR for that ad is 1/100, 1%.

3. Don't place too many keywords in one ad group - if your
keyword phrase is “red wagons” then create an ad group of 2
ads containing this phrase. If your keyword phrase is “blue
wagons” then create another ad group with 2 ads containing
this phrase. All your keywords must be similar.

4. Write an attractive ad - you have a very limited space
to write your ad so you need to make each word count if you
want your visitors to click through to your web site or
landing page. Start with a clear headline, followed by
benefit, feature then web address.

5. Use strong verbs in your ad - strong verbs link directly
to the five senses--touch, sight, smell, sound, and
taste--and to familiar emotions. They are short and
personal: "run," "fight," "love," "say."

Weak verbs seem abstract and impersonal. They tend to
be long words: "employ," "postpone," "construct."

They spend millions of dollars researching words which will
attract readers. By using strong verbs in your ads your
visitor will be more inclined to take action.

6. Write ads that have rhythm - ads that have a flow nice
flow to them effect people in a better way than ones that
don’t ie “simple self defense”

7. Set a daily budget - Google will recommend a specific
amount to spend for each click. Don’t go with their
recommendation as they probably have their own self
interest in mind. Start with a smaller daily amount than
what is suggested ie 5 cents per click and keep a eye on
your CTR. Ads shown at the top of the page don’t
necessarily produce the highest CTR. Aim for positions 6-8.
Google will rotate your ads periodically so each one of
them gets equal exposure.

8. Check on your ad regularly - when you first run your ad,
check on it 3-4 times per day until you have got at least
50 clicks.

9. Refine your ads - discard those ads that are not
producing a high click through rate. Continue editing those
ads that work or create new ones within your same ad group
until you find a winner. You can do this by using different
combinations of keywords or trying different headlines.

10. Track your ads - track which ads produce the most
clicks. The adtracker I recommend you use is Adtrackz:

This software allows you to create a different URL for each
ad and tracks how many clicks you receive each day from
placing the ad. You can also use the Google tracker that's
included with your AdWrords account, however it is not as
powerful as Adtrackz and has much less features.

When you have created a winning ad (high CTR) adjust the
landing page of your web site until you convert the
visitors into buyers.

By mastering Google Adwords Ads, you can confidently
expand your marketing campaign to include other PPC
advertising companies ie Overture, FindWhat and also try
offline advertising.

From the moment your AdWords account becomes active, it begins to generate valuable data that will help you optimize and fine-tune your marketing activities. In order to bill you correctly, Google must carefully monitor the number of clicks that each and every one of your keywords and search phrases generates. Not only that, they also have to report on what your active bid was at the precise moment that each click was generated.

It is important that you familiarize yourself with the reporting data that Google provides. Experience has shown that, although one may generate a vast list of search terms, keywords and phrases, it is invariably a very small subset of these search terms that generate the lion's share of cost and clicks. The click reports will alert you to this, and help you optimize your activities.

Some advertisers may have the capacity to track a click directly from a particular site and keyword back to the sale of an item at their site through the use of 'cookies' or other online tracking methods. If you have the ability and resources to create unique tracking URLs for each keyword or search phrase, I highly recommend doing this. The ideal situation for a any advertiser is to know which specific keywords, titles, descriptions, and products are driving the highest return on investment (ROI). Even if you are not capable of tracking a click through to sale, I recommend maintaining an ongoing ROI report as described below.
Closing the Loop - ROI Reports

Below is an example of a general Return on Investment (ROI) report similar to one that I've used extensively to manage cost per click sites, and to optimize our advertising dollars spent there. While it can be somewhat time consuming and resource intensive to generate a report such as this from your actual results, it is well worth the effort if you reveal information that saves you money on bids, or dramatically increases sales.

* Site: The cost per click site that generated the clicks for this reporting period for this keyword.
* Keyword: The keyword or search phrase that generated the click and cost data.
* Total Cost: The total dollar cost for all clicks associated with this keyword over the reporting period.
* Estimated Impressions: An estimate of how many times the ad listing was actually viewed whether it was clicked on or not -- this data is available from your AdWords reporting.
* Clicks: The total number of times the ad listing was clicked during the reporting period.
* Average Cost Per Click: The average cost per click during the reporting period.
* Clickthrough Percent: The number of clicks divided by the number of estimated impressions for the reporting period.
* Sales: The total number of sales generated by this keyword during the reporting period.
* Cost Per Sale: The total cost divided by sales for the reporting period.

The key to successful ROI is to manage your campaigns by sales. The optimum campaigns are driving the highest volume of sales for the lowest possible cost per sale. If you're optimizing your listings according to how many sales they make and the cost of those sales, you have mastered the secret of the ROI report.

With the advent of Google AdWords, it's possible to target prospects at the very moment they're thinking about buying your products or services. If someone runs a Google search on digital cameras, they only see ads for digital cameras. If someone performs a search on organically grown coffee beans, they only see ads for organically grown coffee. Google AdWords enables you to implement precisely targeted advertising.

Read on to learn how to maximize your success with Google AdWords. With proper preparation and execution, starting Google AdWords can be like planting a money tree that will provide your business with a steady stream of revenue.
What is Google AdWords?

Open up a Web browser and go to the Google website. Type in the search term "coffee" and click search. Essentially, two types of search results come up: on the left and below the search box are the organic search results that nobody has sponsored. On the right side of your browser window, and sometimes above the organic results are the Sponsored Links. The Sponsored Links are paid advertisements. Sponsored links are always identified as such by the heading Sponsored Links.

As participants in what is actually automated auction, each of these advertisers (or Sponsors) is bidding for the keyword "coffee". Find your Niche

Often, many companies compete for popular keywords (e.g., coffee). On the other hand, popular keywords get millions of searches, so there may be enough clicks to go around -- in this case, you don't need to be the highest, or nearly-highest bidder in order to achieve good results from your campaign. The only way to find out if a particular keyword will work for you is to try it out. The problem is that many other advertisers may also be bidding for the popular keywords, so your cost per click (or CPC) is likely to be high. You are more likely to get a low CPC with more obscure, highly targeted keywords. It will take some thought to come up with the right keywords for your particular site and product.

Our coffee roaster would probably want to try the keyword coffee, and watch it like a hawk as it could result in many low quality clicks (not many conversions to leads or sales). If a keyword does not produce high quality clicks after a reasonable trial period (a couple weeks), then remove it; it may even be obvious sooner that a particular keyword is costing money but not producing results.

Perhaps our coffee roaster sells shade-grown coffee that protects Central American songbird habitat. While far fewer people are likely to search for "shade-grown coffee" than for "coffee", the more targeted term is likely to yield a lower CPC and higher quality clicks.

Do some brainstorming and write down an initial list of keywords that matches your market niche. This process of finding targeted keywords will be a useful exercise to help you focus your campaigns and maximize your return on investment.

The first thing you need to get started with AdWords is a goal. Is your goal to make direct sales via ecommerce on your website? Is your goal to capture sales leads that you can follow up with to make the sale? Alternatively, is your goal a combination of both of these outcomes? Once you have determined a goal, you need a website that helps you achieve that goal.

Your website should be eye-catching and well organized, and include landing pages for your products or services. To see some examples of landing pages, perform a search for your services, and look at what other companies in your market are doing. The landing page for your advertisement might be your main website or homepage if your website focuses tightly on one product or service that you're advertising (e.g., this permission-based email marketing website). Otherwise, the landing page should be a page within your website that focuses on the specific product or service you're advertising.

If you're selling directly from your website, your site should include a secure ecommerce system. Any good, technically competent web design firm can set this up for you.

If you want sales leads, then your site should include a call to action to persuade people to request more information. The way they submit a lead is to click on a link to a lead capture form. You need a form that, at a minimum, sends you -- or the appropriate sales staff -- an email containing the lead's details. Ideally, the system would also create a lead for you in a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system such as SalesForce or SugarCRM.

Whether you're selling directly from your website or capturing leads, your website should always provide obvious ways to contact you using whatever method the prospect feels most comfortable with: a contact form, email, or telephone. Some company websites make it hard for users to figure out how to contact the company for more information.

It's important to have a number of people -- both inside and outside of your company -- test your website's ease of use. Prospects should never have to wonder how to buy from you, or how to contact you to ask a question about your products and services.
Sign Up for Google AdWords

Once you have a goal, web site, and landing page, you're ready to sign up for Google AdWords. Learn by doing -- it's easy to write the advertisement and select keywords using the tools that Google provides during the sign up process. In addition, some web hosting providers have collaborated with Google, and can offer you a free AdWords coupon to get you started.

If you plan to spend at least $30 per day on AdWords, Google offers a JumpStart program to help you get started using the program. Google JumpStart specialists will help you create a campaign. The cost of the program is $299, but Google will apply that as a credit toward the cost of your initial clicks. Not having used JumpStart myself, I cannot vouch for its quality, though Google generally offers high quality services.

Campaigns and Ad Groups

The Campaign level is where you set your daily budget, language targeting, location targeting, ad distribution preferences, and the start and end dates for your campaigns (if applicable).

The Ad Group level is where enter your keywords and the advertisements themselves. Each Ad Group has one or more ads. Write at least two ads for each ad group so you can try different approaches and compare the results.

In my experience, it has been beneficial to create multiple campaigns so I can experiment with different parameters and compare the results. I keep campaigns that work well and delete those that do not.

Targeting

Choose the language you want to target, and then the countries or territories. This requires some thought. Can you offer your product or service globally, in the United States, or in just your city or region? You can target your campaign to the world or to specific countries, regions, states, or cities.

For even more precise targeting, you can target your campaign to a certain number of miles from your business or even an area bounded by coordinates. Choosing carefully will ensure that you maximize the return you make on your investment in the advertisement.
Write your Advertisements

You have a 25-character title get searchers' attention, and a 70-character ad to make them interested enough to want to click on your ad. This isn't a lot of text, so make your content pithy.

Write the Headline, the text of the ad, and enter the Display Link (always link to main page of your website), and then enter the Destination URL (your landing page). As we discussed above, the Destination URL might be your main page, or a page within your website that's dedicated to selling the product in question. Below are a couple of fictional ad examples. I don't work in the coffee industry, but I do enjoy a good cup of coffee.

Headline: Shade Grown Coffee Beans
Description line 1: Shade grown coffee. Tastes
Description line 2: better & saves valuable rainforest.
Display URL: www.goodshadegrowncoffee.com

Conversion Tracking

Tracking the conversion rate of your campaigns -- i.e., how many sales or leads you generate from your investment -- requires a little preparation. You will need to have your webmaster embed snippets of code into the appropriate pages on your website. Google explains how to do this in its online AdWords documentation.

Google Analytics

In the fictional advertisement examples I gave above, you may have noticed the codes in the destination URL's: "coff1" and "coff2". These are tracking codes that facilitate the tracking of a wealth of information by Google Analytics.

Google Analytics, which Google integrated with AdWords, is a very powerful service for tracking the success of both the organic and paid search results for your website. It will help you better understand your website visitors' experiences in detail. In addition, you can learn which keywords attract the best prospects, and which of your campaigns deliver the best return on investment. You can use Google Analytics to track marketing campaigns other than AdWords as well. Unfortunately, Google Analytics is too big a topic to cover here, though there is plenty of information on it online -- the Google website is a good place to start!

Choose Your Keywords

As I mentioned earlier, it's important to pick good keywords. Initially, choose both general keywords and narrowly targeted keywords, and carefully evaluate the results. Keep keywords that generate results, and remove keywords that aren't working for you. You'll probably need to run your campaigns for a while before you have enough information to determine which keywords are succeeding for you.

In the keyword space provided in the setup process, list the keywords or keyword phrases you would like to use. Because people tend to type fast when they search the web, be sure to include common mis-spellings of your keywords. Here are some example keywords that our fictional coffee roaster might use:

* coffee
* coffe
* shade grown coffee
* shade grown coffe
* shade grown
* shade coffee
* coffee shade grown
* shade grown coffee migratory birds
* benefits of shade grown coffee
* gourmet coffee
* gourmet coffee beans
* gourmet coffees
* coffee beans
* gourmet coffee beans
* organic coffee
* organic coffee beans
* certified organic coffee
* coffee beans organic
* mail order organic coffee
* bulk coffee

To generate more keywords, enter a keyword into the Keyword Tool Box and click on Get More Keywords. This will generate additional keywords, some of which will be relevant to you, and some of which will not. Keep the relevant keywords and toss the rest.

Now, you have a good starting list. Later, you will want to add new keywords, and remove non-performing keywords. A good keyword is one that yields you conversions into customers or good leads.
Google Search versus Google Content Network

Google AdWords can place your ad in two places: in Google search and the content network. Google search provides results from searches that prospective customers run directly using www.google.com. The content network consists of Google partner sites and sites that run advertisements through Google's AdSense program.

In my experience, Google search has yielded more quality clicks than the content network. The content network is worth trying, but I recommend you put it into a separate campaign so that you can measure its results against your Google search campaign.

The content network is an opt-out service, though it's not possible to opt out during the setup process. To opt out of the content network for a specific campaign, you can go back to the Campaign Settings and uncheck the checkbox for content network.

Then, set up a separate campaign where you focus on the content network and opt out of the search network. Compare the results between the two campaigns. It is possible that you'll find Google search is more productive than the content network but, of course, your results may be different from mine.

If you want to keep it simple until you are more comfortable with AdWords, I recommend that you start with the search network. Then, come back in a few weeks and set up a separate campaign to try the content network, and compare the results with those you generate through the search network.

Your Daily Budget

Your daily budget for your campaign is the ceiling on your daily spending. You can set this number to whatever figure you want. It's a good idea to start out with a relatively low daily budget while you refine your AdWords effectiveness. As your ad campaigns succeed and bring you more business, you'll likely want to increase your budget.

Start with a daily budget of about $10 to $15 per day, and gradually increase that amount as you fine-tune your approach.

Your Bid

In addition to your daily budget, you will need to set a maximum bid that you are willing to pay as a Cost Per Click (CPC). This require some trial and error to get right. Being the highest bidder is not really what that you want. Instead, you want to get the greatest number of quality clicks for your budget. If you bid too high, your CPC will be too high and will eat up your budget too fast; if you bid to low, you won't generate enough clicks or sales.

You might try starting with a bid of $2.50, and see what happens for a day or two. Then gradually raise or lower the bid, depending on results. If clicks consume your daily budget in a couple of hours, then lower your bid. If the advertisements aren't getting many clicks, raise your bid. Continue this process until you find the optimal bid.

Leads and Sales

What if visitors are clicking on your ad but aren't buying from or contacting you? That likely means your ad is working but your website or landing page is not persuading prospective customers to take the next step. It can also mean that your product or service needs some work to become more competitive. Compare what you offer to your competitors.

The simplest things can make a dramatic difference. When your landing page is not getting you conversions, change one aspect, then wait to see what happens over the next day or two. That way, you can determine which changes work. Don't be afraid to try possible solutions, knowing that some changes will fail and some will work well.

Recently, one of our landing pages was not generating a suitable number of conversions. I made some minor changes to the wording on the page and conversions started going up the next day. On another page, we replaced our very simple order form with a much more elaborate version. Our sales for that service immediately plummeted. We simply changed the order form back to the simpler version and sales picked up again immediately.
Harvesting From the Money Tree

The Google AdWords money tree is now planted, optimized, and working to bring you leads and sales. What do you do now? Harvest it, of course, by solid follow-through and by providing the best possible service for your clients.

Go back from time to time, and take a look at your results. Make adjustments to your budget and bids as needed. Write another advertisement that takes a slightly different tack. Remove an ad that's not producing high quality clicks for you. Make some improvements to your website to see if you can increase your conversion rate.

Practice Kaizen -- a Japanese word for continuous, incremental improvement. Even if your Google AdWords money tree is providing good yields, there are always ways to improve its performance.

Limiting Your Distribution – The Key to Success

If there is one component of AdWords that's most often neglected, it's controlling the distribution of your ad impressions to only those prospects who are most targeted. According to the Google AdWords Website:
"Each account is evaluated after every 1,000 ad impressions are delivered on Google. If the CTR for your account falls below a minimum required CTR (which varies by ad position, but is 0.5% for the top spot and slightly reduced for each subsequent position), we'll only show your ads occasionally on your underperforming keywords. (The status of each of your keywords will be clearly indicated in your keyword reports.) If your keywords don't improve, we may disable them. You'll then need to refine your campaign to improve its performance and effectiveness. After editing your campaign, you may restore full ad delivery to your account."

In short, if your ads don't get a decent clickthrough rate (CTR) they will be disabled -- your ads won't be shown. Conversely, if you achieve a high clickthrough rate for a very general term, you will potentially be spending a huge amount of money. So, how do you get your ads more closely targeted to your audience? Here's the secret -- use the built-in tools that Google provides:

* Phrase Match
* Exact Match
* Negative Keywords

Remember, the default setting for AdWords is "Broad Match". This will see your ad displayed when any keyword from your search phrase is typed in any order. So, if you target 'Palm Pilot', under Broad Match, your ad will be shown when someone searches for: airline pilot, auto-pilot, pilot light, palm reader, palm trees, etc. None of these search terms are in the least bit targeted!

Getting Your Ad Targeted

The first step in narrowing the audience to which your ad is displayed is to use the 'Phrase Match' feature in AdWords. This limits your ad to those searches that include your search phrases in order. To activate the 'Phrase Match' feature, simply enclose your search terms in quotation marks, for example, "Palm Pilot". Now, only those terms that include both Palm and Pilot in that order will be shown your ad, such as: free palm pilot, palm pilot software, and palm pilot V.

This may be a good first step for some, but I've found that it's necessary to refine the distribution of my ads even further by using the 'Exact Match' feature. This is particularly useful for increasing the clickthrough rates of poorly performing ads. The 'Exact Match' feature will only display your ads when the exact search phrase is entered. The 'Exact Match' feature is activated once you place parentheses around your search term. In our example, we'd use the term [Palm Pilot]. Now, only the exact search term 'Palm Pilot' will cause our AdWords ad to be displayed.

The third tool is 'Negative Keywords'. This feature simply excludes your ad from displaying along side the search results of any keywords you choose. If you're selling a product or service, you may want to use 'free' as a negative keyword, thus preventing your ad from displaying when the word 'free' is part of the search phrase. To enable negative keywords you simply place a minus sign in front of your search term. If, in our example, we wanted to exclude all searches for 'free palm pilot' and 'palm pilot software', our keyword list would include the following entries:

* free
* software

Use of these targeting features will instantly place you into an elite category of Google AdWords users who have clickthrough and conversion rates at the top of their categories. Now, let's look at how to set your bid.
Creative Strategies for Successful Bidding

There are many different approaches to the process of bidding for position within AdWords. A $5.00 minimum deposit is required to set up any AdWords account, but once it's set up, any of the listed bidding options are available to you.

The 'Always be #1, No Matter What it Takes' Strategy

This strategy espouses the view that being #1 is everything. It is true that the top listing gets the most traffic. In some cases, the top listing can generate much more traffic than the lower listings -- even the second listing. The top listing will also always be the most expensive spot for any given keyword or phrase, and, depending on the popularity of the search term and the bid required to secure it, the top listing may become very expensive to maintain.

Also, as AdWords uses the clickthrough rate to weight your listing, it may simply be impossible to sustain the number one position at any bid price. Remember, too, that Google currently has a $50 per click maximum bid limit. The 'Always be #1' strategy is also prone to bidding wars.

The 'Never Bid More Than the Minimum Bid' Strategy

This strategy focuses on cost containment. Given a vast assortment of search terms, it is likely that some top bids will be only as high as the minimum bid. These terms will most likely be less popular terms that don't generate a significant amount of clicks.

This strategy assumes that even where the top bids are $1 or more, some visitors will read through the entire list of advertisements, and click on much lower bids. As of the writing of this article, Google AdWords bids can range in price from 5 cents, to $50.

The 'Position Yourself Next to a Weaker Competitor' Strategy

The thrust of this strategy is to position your listing as high as possible, while looking critically at competitor's listings and offers. You then position yourself next to a competitor whose price is much higher than yours for the same item, or whose offering is in some other way uncompetitive with yours, thereby making your offering seem even more attractive.

For example, if you mention a sales price of $149 for a Palm V in your listing, and the listing directly above or below yours displays a price of $99 for a Palm V, your offer appears overpriced. However, if there is a listing that offers the Palm V at $199, positioning your listing directly above or below the $199 price can make your price of $149 look more attractive.

The 'Steady State' Strategy

This strategy is similar to the 'Never Bid More Than the Minimum Bid' strategy, but with a twist. You calculate the amount that you are willing to pay for each qualified customer that lands on your site, and always bid exactly that amount. For example, let's say that you calculate that you are more than willing to spend $1.35 for each qualified customer who lands on your site. You simply bid $1.35 on your best keywords, regardless of what others around you bid.

This strategy is often employed by bidders who take a "hands off" approach to their bids. They simply want to set the account up once, and let it run on 'autopilot', without much (if any) maintenance.

Of course, you can access your AdWords account as frequently as you like, and adjust your maximum bid to give the return on investment (ROI) you require. Measuring and maximizing your ROI will be the topic of the forth and final installment of this series.

How to Make the Most of Google AdWords

Are you one of the 150,000 Webmasters and advertisers using Google's AdWords Select keyword targeted text advertising to drive traffic to your Website? If so, you may be able to save a bundle by cheating Google! Okay, so it's not exactly cheating per se, but if you're not using all the tools and tricks that AdWords provides, then you're definitely leaving money on the table. And, when your competitors see your results, they'll think you've somehow cheated the AdWords system.

This series of articles will systematically show you how to:

* Generate the absolute best keyword list for your target market
* Use simple techniques to vastly expand your productive keyword list

Generating Your Keyword List in 5 Easy Steps

In order to get the most out of the AdWords Select program, you simply must have a great keyword list. If your keyword list is not deep enough, you will be doomed to pay top dollar on only a few highly-trafficked phrases that garner top dollar bids. So, what are the steps to developing a great keyword list?

First things first: you need your core list of targeted keywords and search phrases. These are the terms that your customers will type in to find your goods and services. Let's say you have an online store that sells handheld organizers like the Palm Pilot. Take a minute and think about how you would go about searching for a personal digital assistant (PDA) online. Would you search on the term 'digital device'? How about 'PDA'? Maybe 'Palm Pilot' or 'Palm V'? Would you try 'personal electronics'? My point is that there are many, many different and distinct search terms that will get you where you want to go.

So, how can you determine which search terms to use when advertising your goods and services? Follow these instructions:

1. Write down the top search terms that you can think of that describe your business or service. I suggest keeping this list on a spreadsheet if at all possible -- this will make it easier to organize and submit later.

2. Use the Overture 'Search Suggestion Tool' to get an idea of the popularity of each search term and enter this number under a 'monthly impressions' column in your spreadsheet. The tool is located here.

When I searched on our example keywords, I found that those search terms were recently searched as follows:

* Pda - 420,800
* palm pilot - 75,982
* palm V - 3,899
* digital device - 376
* personal electronics - 250

3. Use the Search Suggestion Tool to lengthen your list of search terms. Not only does the Search Suggestion Tool reveal the number of searches for any given search phrase, it also displays any closely related search terms.

Another excellent resource is found at www.wordtracker.com. At $199 for an annual membership, this service will reveal which terms are the most searched on the Web, and also give suggestions for alternative search phrases. Typing 'palm pilot' into Word Tracker also shows a list of search terms (suggestions), and the number of times the associated terms were searched at Overture in the previous month:

* palm pilot software – 6,960
* palm pilot game – 5,486
* palm pilot free game – 5,478
* palm pilot free ware – 2,315
* palm pilot free software – 2,203
* palm pilot downloads – 1,995
* free palm pilot downloads – 1,931
* palm pilot accessory – 1,291
* palm pilot share ware – 985

Add all the new relevant terms and monthly impressions to your spreadsheet list. Be creative! Type in any series of words that you think might lead someone to your product or service. Use a thesaurus and a dictionary to assist you.

4. Go back to your list -– it should be pretty lengthy by now –- and add modifying words that are relevant to your product or service, such as: cheap, discount, low cost, free, premium, authentic, etc. Check the Search Suggestion Tool to assess the number of searches conducted for those terms in the previous month. Enter the terms and data into your spreadsheet under 'monthly impressions'.

In our example, if you use the keyword 'Palm Pilot', why not consider using 'discount Palm Pilot', 'cheap Palm Pilot', or 'low cost Palm Pilot' if they apply to your business? The purpose of these activities is to generate the longest possible list of relevant search terms possible. Why? Remember, you only pay when someone actually clicks on your message. You pay nothing extra to simply list more keywords. Additionally, the more keywords you have, and the more specific the search phrases are, the more likely that your visitor will be truly interested in your product or service. For example: 'pda' is a very general search term. Anyone interested in handheld organizers might search using this term. However, 'Palm V' is a more targeted search term. These customers are narrowed to a particular brand and model. The search phrase 'discount Palm V' is even more targeted, and will attract price conscious Palm V shoppers.

A longer list of relevant search phrases also increases the likelihood that you will attract visitors to your site at a lower cost. That is because it is often possible to bid less for a click if the search term is less popular. More search terms, bid at a lower cost, mean more traffic to your site for fewer advertising dollars.

5. At this point in the process, you should have a fairly comprehensive list of targeted search terms and phrases. I suggest you sort the terms on your spreadsheet by 'monthly impressions' to get a sense of which terms are most popular. These are the terms that can end up costing you the most advertising dollars if you choose to bid for a high ranking.

Congratulations! You have now generated a comprehensive keyword list that will get you ahead of your competitors. In the next installment, we'll look at some rarely used techniques to ensure that your clickthrough rates are among the highest in your category.

More on How to Maximize Google AdWords

Now that you've generated a comprehensive list of targeted keywords and phrases with which to attract your customers, you must create an advertisement which will entice them to visit your site. Google adheres to a strict advertising format: all listings are text only, with a title line of 25 characters and a product or service description with 2 lines of up to 35 characters each. Your URL is also limited to 35 characters.

It is critical that this message be effective, concise and descriptive, and that sales are driven for best results.
Title Lines

The title line is the first aspect of your Google ad that a potential visitor to your site will see. Google also has an affiliate network that displays their search results, and some of these distribution partners display only the title line of your advertisement. At these distribution sites, the only indication of your site's value proposition will be the title description. But even when the full description accompanies your title line in a listing, it is the title line's job to catch the attention and interest of a prospective customer -- and to fluidly transition them into reading your full description and clicking through to your site. No sweat, right? Oh wait…you have to accomplish this using only 25 characters in total!

My process for creation of a title line is fairly straightforward. I open a new document in Microsoft Word, pick the first (most popular) search phrase on my spreadsheet list, and then write a description that really sells my product or service relevant to that keyword or phrase. Initially, I don't really worry about the exact length. I just try to get the most sales driven message I can. After constructing something I like, I highlight the phrase and use the 'Word Count' function under the 'Tools' menu in Word to ascertain its exact length. One caveat! Experience has proven one extremely powerful rule of a search phrase description: your description should contain the search phrase or a derivation of it if at all possible. This will increase the effectiveness of your title. Experience has also shown that if you are offering a compelling value proposition, listing a price will increase clicks. I also like to use capitalize letters in the title. Obviously the word 'free' increases clicks.

For example, if you are writing a title for the search term 'Palm V', your title should include the term 'Palm V'. Here are two 25-character-or-less examples:

Lowest Cost Palm V - $100
Palm V's From Just $99

One great thing about AdWords is that it's pretty easy to change your message. I recommend testing several different approaches and finding the words and phrases that generate the most clicks. It's also smart to review the titles of your competitors in each category. I will type in the keyword or phrase and scan the title line to get a feel for what the main points of competition are. Some categories are very price driven, while others are service focused. There are no hard and fast rules as to what will work best, so continuous testing and refinement should be employed for all important keywords.
Descriptions

Descriptions are the heart and soul of your sales pitch. You've managed to get the attention of your potential customer -- maybe for only a millisecond. Now, you've got to deliver on the promise of your title. Finally, you've got to convince your potential customer that if they click on your link, they will be rewarded with the all the benefits described in your message.

A great description gives as much relevant information as possible to the potential customer. This serves 2 purposes:

* It will encourage qualified prospects to continue on to your site in search of further information, or to purchase your offerings.
* It will discourage random clicks by unqualified prospects who are not firmly in your target demographic.

Your description should include any factors that clearly add value to the customer above and beyond your competition. Do you offer special products or services? A wider selection? Better credit terms? More flexible payment options? Hard to find inventory? These are the kinds of trigger points that can lead to higher clickthroughs.
Another Trick - Where to Direct Your Link

The final step in the customer's journey is to successfully land on your site -- piece of cake, right? It is if you know that you need to land the customer on the portion of your site that is most relevant to the search term. Always link the customer to a page that contains the exact information, product or service that they were searching for. In our example, don't just land the customer on your home page. Land them on the exact page within your site that describes and offers for sale the Palm V!

Never create a disconnection between the original search term and your landing page. Evaluate every keyword and search phrase to identify the best area of your site on which customers should be delivered. Use your spreadsheet to keep track of where you want each search phrase linked. Go to your site, find the correct page, then cut and paste the proper URL into your spreadsheet. This is absolutely necessary to maximize your conversion to sale.

One final note on landing pages and your links: Google will bill you for a click once a customer has clicked on your link. You will be billed for this charge regardless of whether or not your site is functioning properly, or if the customer abandons the process prematurely because your site takes too long to load. Make sure that your site loads quickly, and that the links you deliver are active. If your site goes down, remember to reduce your bids to the minimum amount to prevent spending money driving potential customers to a dead link.
